What's in a name?
I guess with a name like mine (you can shorten it all you like but I'm still Jeffrey Archer at the end of the day) I was destined to like writing. Or was I? I'm not that into politics or news reporting like my most well known namesakes, so is there really any substance to the notion that our lives can be dictated by nature, nurture...or name?
Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner covered some great research in their book Freakonomics - including the study of the two brothers named 'Winner' and 'Loser' - and I'd like to know more.
Apart from my relations, the only other person I know with the surname Archer works in publishing so there's another bookish connection. I don't know anyone else called Jeff or Jeffrey at the moment but the one other Jeffrey I did know was a member of the same sporting club as me when I was eight. It was only a small club so did we arrive there together because our parents had the same taste in forenames?
My father also goes by the name of Jeffrey Archer but Jeffrey is his middle name so I can understand why our routes through life have been so different.
I've seen other bloggers with the same name as me and I see some similar interests - heavy metal sins as a teenager and a passion for fresh air and sunlight - but is this just coincidence?
So what is in a name? If you share my name I'd love to hear from you to see if we have anything in common.
Or do you know anyone who shares your name and are there any commonalities between you? Or are you competely different in your outlooks on life with your namesakes?
Come on, let's find out once and for all: Nature, Nurture or Name...
